What can I do for you and your singers?

I can share the knowledge of 40 years of award-winning university and professional conducting, teaching, and singing, thereby inspiring your singers to reach beyond themselves.

The Native Americans of the upper-northwest once believed that the Great Spirit sang our world into being. In many ways, we as conductors and singers, sing worlds into being in each or our rehearsals and concerts.  Daily, we inspire external and internal communities. In doing so, we change lives. In many ways, we serve as Choral Poets.
— Jerry McCoy

What have I done that I can share with your singers and student conductors?

Oklahoma State University
Between 1984 and 2000, I took a program on the wane and led it to national and international visibility - 2 national ACDA conferences, 6 SWACDA conferences, the Association of British Choral Directors (ABCD) national conference, plus 3 OMEA performances. More importantly, I , and my colleagues, crafted an approach to the study of singing that was storytelling at its best.

University of North Texas
Between 2000 and 2015, I took a regionally-known choral singing and conducting program and led it to national and international prominence - 2 national ACDA conferences, 1 NCCO national conference, featured performances for International Choral Festivals/Competitions in Daejeon South Korea and Taipei, Taiwan, plus 3 TMEA performances and recordings for GIA and CD Baby.  In addition, during my time at UNT, we placed more than 46 of our DMA graduates in university and professional choir positions in the USA, South Korea, and Mexico. (South Korea boasts one of the foremost professional choir systems in the world. More than 25 cities support full or part-time work for singers and conductors. During my time at UNT, we placed 5 primary conductors and 1 assistant conductor with these professional choirs.)

Student Successes
Perhaps more importantly, at UNT we established a mutually supportive relationship between the voice, opera, and choral faculties which led to a broader spectrum of career opportunities for our singers. A significant number of former singers in our UNT choirs have become regular members of GRAMMY-winning professional chamber choirs, including Conspirare and Roomful of Teeth. Other of our graduates hold regular singing positions with Kinarra, the Rose Ensemble, the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, Seraphic Fire, the South Dakota Chorale, the Choral Pick-Up, Orpheus Chamber Singers, and other nationally acclaimed professional choirs.  Several others have held permanent singing positions with the Metropolitan Opera Chorus, the US Military choruses, and the 'Presidents Own' Marine Band.

ACDA
My service as chair of ACDA's College and University R&S Committee at both the divisional and national levels and my service on the National Executive Committee for 9 years (2 years as national president) opened myriad doors for my career, for which I will be ever grateful. Participation in the International Conductor Exchange Programs to Germany, Sweden, and Venezuela, as well as reciprocally hosting visiting conductors for the ICEP afforded me connections and friendships across the globe. Such networks allowed me to learn singing and conducting techniques that profoundly shaped my professional life as well as new bodies of literature that shaped my programming concepts. One of my foremost accomplishments while president of ACDA (2009-2011) was the redevelopment of the ICEP, which had lain dormant since the mid-1990's. My intent was for ACDA to redevelop and foster its international outreach program for emerging American conductors who not only would study the music of foreign lands, but also absorb elements of the cultures of the lands and peoples they visited.

Networks
The foremost aspect of what we do as teachers/singers/conductors is create communities. In those communities we reflect our own and others' life stories. The following lists give you a glimpse, both nationally and internationally, of the widely revered conductors with whom I have interacted and learned, from singing under Eric Ericson to a class on the Bach motets with Frieder Bernius to several years of performances with the Robert Shaw Festival Singers.  To date, I have served as outside peer reviewer for thirty-five  university promotion considerations. I have worked on forty-eight university campuses in myriad events, including where I taught.

I have I been fortunate indeed.

I hope to share with you and your students my experiences and skills
